Sunday gingerbread (this time with ginger)

Stacked gingerbread
I decided to bake rather late on a Sunday afternoon as there was an hour or so before dinnertime and I didn't want to turn on the television or break up endless battles over plastic figurines, which seemed to be the other option on this particular day.  We had been reading The Gingerbread Baby so Z1 thought gingerbread would be a good idea. It was, as the book says, cold outside and warm inside.

In hindsight, baking when feeling slightly exasperated and desperate isn't the best idea. However, in a way we did better than last time as we did have ginger this time. I didn't have golden syrup but the fancy molasses was fine.

It turns out, gingerbread was an excellent pre-dinner snack as Z1 ate all her dinner even after the brutal beheading and devouring that you see pictured (in part).

  1. I often turn to baking when exasperated, I find it quite stressful (Esme's still quite young for it) and messy BUT always feel very virtuous afterwards (in a 'parenting accomplishment' kind of way, not a 'not eaten all the mixture' one...)

    1. Yes, I did feel it was a very worthy and good-parenting way to spend Sunday afternoon and Z2 was quite good at cutting out the gingerbread shapes. I also thought the mixing of butter and dry ingredients to make a breadcrumb-like mix was really rather well done by Z1 - I should have taken a photo really. Oh, and when the final mixture seemed not to stick together properly, I was inordinately proud of improvising by adding a little water. They are definitely tastier with ginger in them than without.

    1. The smell was pretty good and it nicely covered the smoky burning smell that resulted from me putting the butter in the preheating oven to soften a little and then forgetting about it. Hmm...I seem to have left a few of the details out of this post.
